Eagles Nest Wilderness 2001:
Eagles Nest Wilderness, outside of Vail, Colorado was the sight of our 2001 adventures. Matt and Andrea, and Nancy all met us in Denver and we drove on from there. Although the beginning of the trip wasn’t spectacular, the fun company and crazy ballet lessons at altitude made up for the fun. The second part of the trip was gorgeous, with high peaks and view of Vail from the top.
Maroon-Bells / Snowmass 2000:
Matt and Andrea joined us just one week after their honeymoon as we set out to wander in the Maroon Bells outside of Aspen, CO. We hiked over the notorious West Maroon Pass and then set out to do a loop over Buckskin and Trailrider passes. It was beautiful scenery, even though we had rough weather.
South Wind River Range 1999:
Into the southern Wind River Range, we made our way past Dad’s and Marm’s Lake to Shadow Lake at the foot of the backside of the Cirque of the Towers. We also bushwhacked our way into Baptiste basin and sat at the foot of mountains that literally hung over us.
Holy Cross Wilderness 1998:
Wet, wet, wet, and more wet. This trip into the Holy Cross Wilderness in central Colorado was one of the wettest trips we had encountered in a long time. It was Andrea’s first trip with us, and despite the rain, we saw beautiful peaks, gorgeous flowers, and old ruined mining cabins. We also encountered llamas, low-flying helicopters, and the first year of “squish and nerdle.
North Wind River Range 1997:
For Tim’s first backpacking trip with the Lang family (Jennie soon to become a Carlson) we headed into the North Wind River Range in Northwestern Wyoming. We made our way to one of our favorite backcountry spots – Titcomb Basin. However, the rainy pack-up was an omen of things to come – Titcomb Basin was so clouded in, you couldn’t see the peaks, and it snowed on us! Despite the weather, Tim is now a hardcore backpacker!!
